Bhutan

The Kalij Pheasant is distributed along the Himalayas and south into Myanmar and Thailand. It is found in a wide variety of habitats from forest to secondary vegetation and gullies with dense undergrowth.

The male is mainly blue-black with red skin around the eyes. Sub-species vary quite significantly. Here we have the sub-species L. l. melanota in photo 1 showing white on the breast while photo 2 shows the sub-species L. l. lathami has white barring on the lower back and rump.

The female, seen on the left of photo 1, is brown with a scaly appearance and red skin around the eye.
