The Ibisbill is distributed in the major mountain systems of central Asia and is found in mountain rivers with shingle beds and little vegetation. It is mainly at between 500 and 4,400 metres.

It is very distinctive with its long decurved dark red bill, its thin black collar and its white belly. The grey on the forehead indicates that it is in non-breeding plumage.

It feeds on aquatic insects, larvae, beetles and crustaceans for which it forages usually up to its belly in the water. It is normally seen singly.
