The Common Hoopoe breeds across most of Europe, Asia and Africa though many of the European and Asian populations migrate southwards during the winter.

It feeds mainly on the ground where it uses its long bill to probe for large insects and their larvae. It also eats small lizards, snakes, frogs, etc..

It is unmistakable with its crest, long, decurved bill and black and white pattern on the back, wings and tail.
