The Himalayan Griffon is distributed along the length of the Himalayas and into Afghanistan in the west and China in the east.

Himalayan Griffon, Pele La Pass, Wangdue Phodrang, Bhutan, March 2008 - click for larger image It is a bird of the open mountains where it forages for carrion by soaring. It is found mainly at between 1,200 and 4,000 metres but will forage at up to 6,000 metres.

It is larger, longer-tailed and generally paler than the Eurasian Griffon Gyps fulvus .
