The Great Hornbill is distributed from the southern Himalayas east through southern China to Vietnam and south through the Malay Peninsula to Sumatra. There s a disjunct population in the Western Ghats of south-west India.

It is found in undisturbed evergreen forest at up to 2,000 metres.

It is a very large hornbill with a black band across the white tail and white on the head neck wing-coverts. These are usually tinged yellow with preen oil.

Great Hornbill, Deothang, Samdrup Jongkhar, Bhutan, April 2008 - click for larger image The male, seen here in photos 5 and 6, has a large flat casque which comes to a double point at the front and it has a black rim. The male also has a dark red eyes.

The female, seen here in photos 1 to 4, has a smaller casque which lacks the black rim and it also has a white eye.
