It is closely associated with bamboo in broadleaf forest and is often difficult to see in the dense undergrowth.

It has a bright rufous head, brown upperparts and whitish underparts.

This species was formerly known as Greater Rufous-headed Parrotbill when it was lumped with what is now known as Rufous-headed Parrotbill P. bakeri but has now been split by the HBW and Birdlife International checklist.

There are recordings on xeno-canto and additional information is available on Avibase  .
