The White Nile Sparrow is distributed in disjunct areas of Ethiopia, South Sudan and Uganda. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in grassland with bushes, open woodland and semi-desert but rarely close to human activity.

Captain George Shelley was a geologist and amateur ornithologist. He was also a nephew of Percy Bysshe Shelley, the poet.
