The White-winged Tern is a marsh tern which breeds near marshes, bogs and wetlands in eastern Europe and Asia but migrates during the northern winter to Africa, south-east Asia and Australia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

White-winged Tern, Lake Shalla, Ethiopia, January 2016 - click for larger image It is very similar to Black Tern C. niger but has a white wing in breeding plumage. This is a juvenile bird which looks similar to a non-breeding adult but has darker markings on the head.
