The White-browed Owl is endemic to Madagascar where it is found from sea-level up to 800 metres mainly in the north-east and south-west of the island. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in a variety of forest and wooded habitats.

It feeds mainly on insects by swooping down on its prey from a perch. It is active at night.

Traditionally placed in the genus Ninox, recent studies suggest that it is best placed in Athene.
