Madagascar The Western Reef-egret is distributed around the coasts of West Africa, East Africa, Madagascar, the Arabian Peninsula, India and Sri Lanka. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found mainly in coastal habitats but, in Madagascar can be found inland in savanna grasslands near water. |

It is sometimes lumped with Little Egret E. garzetta and the Madagascar subspecies shown here is sometimes split as Dimorphic Egret E. dimorpha but Birdlife International include three sub-species, E. g. gularis of West Africa, E. g. schistacea of East Africa to India and E. g. dimorpha of Madagascar within Western Reef-egret. | |||

There are two colour morphs. The dark morph has a white throat and white at the bend of the wing. The white morph has all white plumage with occasional dark spots. Lores in both morphs are yellow except in breeding plumage when they turn red as in photo 6. | |||
