Ghana and Ethiopia

The Violet-backed Starling is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara with quite a lot of seasonal migration involved. For a distribution map see Birdlife International.

It is found in open woodland and avoids forest.

The male is very distinctive with its iridescent violet above contrasting with the white below while the female, in photo 2, is quite different. The juvenile in photo 6 is similar to the female but note the dark brown iris as well as the pale gape.
