The Violet-backed Hyliota is distributed in tropical Africa in disjunct areas from Sierra Leone to Rwanda where it is found in forest and woodland. The Hyliotas used to be regarded as flycatchers but they are now classified as Old World Warblers of the Sylviidae family.

Female Violet-backed Hyliota, Kakum, Ghana, May 2011 - click for larger image The male, seen here in photo 1, has deep violet-blue upperparts and whitish underparts while the female (photo 2) has an orange throat and breast paling to buff on the lower breast. Photo 3 shows a distant pair.
