The Tawny Eagle is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara, north-west Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian subcontinent. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in a variety of habitats but is absent from forest and desert.

At close quarters a distinguishing feature is the length of the gape which ends under the eye in the Tawny Eagle but extends beyond that in the Steppe Eagle.
Tawny Eagle, Lalibela, Ethiopia, January 2016 - click for larger image The overall colour can be anything from very dark to pale brown or creamy-buff. Immatures are paler with thin white lines across the coverts and the trailing edges of the wings and showing a creamy crescent on the rump.
