Ethiopia The Tawny Eagle is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara, north-west Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian subcontinent. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in a variety of habitats but is absent from forest and desert. |

It is similar to the Steppe Eagle A. nipalensis though slightly smaller. At close quarters a distinguishing feature is the length of the gape which ends under the eye in the Tawny Eagle but extends beyond that in the Steppe Eagle. | |||

The overall colour can be anything from very dark to pale brown or creamy-buff. Immatures are paler with thin white lines across the coverts and the trailing edges of the wings and showing a creamy crescent on the rump. | |||
