The Sun Lark is distributed in a broad band just south of the Sahara but away from the coast from Senegal and Gambia to north-west Uganda. It is found in open, grassy areas often with rocky hills and near villages.

Sun Lark, Mole, Ghana, June 2011 - click for larger image It is a medium-sized lark, rather dark in colour which is sandy-rufous. It has a prominent supercilium which extends behind the head and is heavily streaked on the upperparts and breast.

It forages on the ground for grass seeds and insects.

Its song is a short, fast grating warble.
