The Green-backed Heron is distributed in South America, Africa and Madagascar, Indian Ocean islands, south and east Asia, the East Indies, Australia and Pacific islands. There is a distribution map at Heron Conservation along with a lot more information.

There are over 20 sub-species all with some plumage variation. To see photos of the nominate sub-species see my South American page.

The sub-species in Africa is B. s. atricapilla which has a dark grey neck and more distinct rufous on the upper neck. This photo shows a juvenile bird which is mainly grey-brown with buffy spots.
