The Straw-tailed Whydah is distributed in north-east Africa from Ethiopia and South Sudan to Tanzania. It is found in arid and semi-arid scrub and grassland where it feeds mainly on grass seeds.

Village Indigobird, Bogol Manyo Road, Ethiopia, January 2016 - click for larger image The breeding male is distinctive with its buffy-yellow and black plumage, red bill and red legs. It also has a pair of very elongated tail feathers. The female (on the left in photo 2) has a rufous-tawny head and red bill and legs. Photo 3 shows a male in eclipse plumage.

It is a brood parasite and the host species is the Purple Grenadier.
