The Spur-winged Goose is found in Africa south of the Sahara. It is found in freshwater marshes, rivers and other wetlands.

It is a very large perching duck with a long neck. In flight the white forewing is obvious both above and below the wing. The male has a red knob on its bill.

Photo 3 shows the spur on the wing that gives the bird both its English and its generic name: plektron - a spur; pteros - winged.
