Previously considered a race of the Common Ostrich S. camelus, most authorities now consider the Somali Ostrich to be a species. This is on the basis of the grey-blue neck and legs, the deeper black plumage, the paler eye and the barer crown. It is distributed in Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia and Kenya. See the distribution map at Birdlife International who classify it as Vulnerable. It is found in arid and semi-arid bush and grassland.
