The Shikra is distributed throughout most of Africa south of the Sahara, the Arabian Peninsula, central Asia, India and south-east Asia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in dry areas with trees such as deciduous woodland and wooded savannah.

This photo is of a male which is distinguished from the female by its red rather than yellow eye.

It feeds on lizards, small birds, rodents, insects, etc..
