The Rusty-breasted Wheatear is endemic to Ethiopia and Eritrea where it is found in grassland and moorland between 950 and 3,200 metres. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

Rusty-breasted Wheatear, Bale Mountains, Ethiopia, January 2016 - click for larger image Many authorities lump it with Red-breasted Wheatear O. bottae but Birdlife International split it on the basis of its darker breast, its smaller and more clear-cut white throat, its pinkish-rufous rather than pinkish-white belly and undertail coverts, its darker grey-brown upperparts and its longer bill.
