The Rufous-headed Ground-roller is endemic to Madagascar where it is found in undisturbed dark rainforest with thick undergrowth at between 800 and 2,000 metres. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is classified as Near Threatened given the loss of this type of habitat.

It feeds on insects which it forages on the ground. It can be very difficult to see.
