Rouget's Rail is endemic to Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is found at between 1,700 and 4,100 metres in moorland and marshes. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is classified as Near Threatened because of its declining population due to habitat loss. Despite this it is relatively easy to see as it seems less shy than many other rails.

Rouget was a French explorer.
