The Red-throated Bee-eater is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara and north of the Equator from Senegal to Ethiopia. It is found in open savanna woodland but requires hard sandy low cliffs in which to build their nests (see photo 4).

It has a bright red throat and deep blue on the lower belly and undertail coverts. The bird in photo 3 has a brown crown which seems unusual. Juveniles are duller but have a green stripe on the cheek below the black mask.
