The Red-shouldered Vanga is endemic to a restricted area in south-west Madagascar. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in semi-arid thorn scrub at about 100 metres notably at La Table National Park near Toliara.

It is a small vanga looking a bit like a tit. This is a male - a bit of a skulker - showing its black mask surrounded by white eyebrow and cheek, black throat and pale iris.
