Most authorities treat this as a sub-species of Red-collared Widowbird Euplectes ardens but HBW and Birdlife International treat it as a species based on its shorter tail; its red cowl rather than all black crown; and its retention of the black tail when not breeding.

Photos 1 and 2 are of males in non-breeding plumage while photo 3 is of a female.
