Most authorities treat this as a sub-species of Red-collared Widowbird Euplectes ardens but HBW and Birdlife International treat it as a species based on its shorter tail; its red cowl rather than all black crown; and its retention of the black tail when not breeding.

The Red-cowled Widowbird is distributed in Ethiopia, Kenya and Northern Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.
