The Red-billed Oxpecker is distributed in the eastern part of Africa from Eritrea and Ethiopia to South Africa. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in savanna and pasture where there are wild mammals or undipped cattle.

Red-billed Oxpecker, Lake Ziway, Ethiopia, January 2016 - click for larger image They spend almost all their time perched on large mammals where they eat on a variety of ectoparasites such as ticks, mites, lice and leeches. They will also feed on the mammal's blood and mucus if available.

The Red-billed Oxpecker differs from the Yellow-billed Oxpecker B. africanus in having an entirely red bill, a yellow eye-ring around the red eye and a plain brown rump.
