The Red-and-yellow Barbet is distributed in East Africa from Ethiopia and Somalia to Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in dry bush and wooded grassland usually near termite mounds where it feeds on insects such as termites as well as fruit and seeds.

They perform loud, rolling duets.
