The Madagascar Sacred Ibis is endemic to Madagascar where it is distributed on the west coast. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. Because of its rarity and the threats to its habitat it is classified as Endangered.

Some authorities lump it with African Sacred Ibis T. aethiopicus but it is distinguished by several plumage differences, its white rather than dark brown iris and its different display.
