The Madagascar Cuckoo-hawk is endemic to Madagascar in evergreen, dry deciduous and spiny forest up to about 1,600 metres. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

Compared to an adult it has more extensive white streaking on the head and more white at the base of the tail. The bird in photo 4 is a female because only females incubate. This nest was about 25 metres from the ground.

It feeds on chameleons, geckos and large insects. Mainly crepuscular in habit this bird is not often seen.
