Lichtenstein's Sandgrouse is distributed across Africa north of the Equator from Morocco to Egypt and the Horn of Africa and into the Arabian Peninsula, southern Iran and Pakistan. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in arid areas such as desert, semi-desert and stony desert.

The male (photos 1 to 3) has an orange-red bill, black and white bands on the forehead, a small white patch behind the eye and bare yellow skin around the eye. It has a broad buffy breast band with two narrow black bands. The female (photos 4 and 5) is entirely barred with narrow black lines and has a dark bill.

Martin Lichtenstein was a German physician and ornithologist who founded Berlin zoo.
