The Lesser Kestrel breeds from Iberia and North Africa through southern Europe, the Middle East and into Asia while it tends to winter mainly in Africa south of the Sahara. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in hot, dry areas with little vegetation and requires rock faces or buildings for nest sites.

The male, seen here in photo 1 has a mainly grey head, a plain chestnut back, blue-grey greater coverts and blackish tips to the wings. The female, seen here in photo 2, lacks the plain grey areas and is heavily spotted.
