The Lesser Honeyguide is distributed in most of Africa south of the Sahara. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found at forest edges, woodland and bush country up to 2,600 metres.

It feeds on bees wax and insects including wasps and ants but rarely honey bees. It follows rather than guides humans and other honeyguides as it makes its way to bees wax sources.
