Lafresnaye's Vanga is distributed in the south of Madagascar where it is found in lowland dry, spiny forest up to an altitude of 100m. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

It looks similar to Van Dam's Vanga X. damii but the two species do not overlap. Lafresnaye's Vanga has a larger and pale-grey bill.

Baron Noel Frederic Armand Andre de Lafresnaye was a French ornithologist and collector who has given his name to several species and sub-species.
