Intermediate Egret
Ardea intermedia (aka Egretta intermedia) |
Mole NP, Ghana The Intermediate Egret is distributed from West Africa across the Indian Subcontinent to Southeast Asia and Australia. It is found in a variety of habitats but is more commonly found inland in areas with abundant aquatic vegetation than on the coast. |
It looks similar to Great Egret E. alba in non-breeding plumage but is smaller (compare it with the Grey Heron Ardea cinerea in photo 1) and has a shorter, stubbier bill. Its neck is less kinked and the line of the gape is shorter than that of the Great Egret ending at the back of the eye. | ||||
