Hartlaub's Duck is distributed in Equatorial West Africa where it is found in secluded pools and marshes, rivers and streams in dense forest. Because of its habitat it tends to be difficult to see.

The bill is blackish with a pale tip. The male has white at the base of the bill but this is lacking in the female.

No nest has been found in the wild yet but it is presumed that they nest in tree-hollows.
