The Northern Grey-headed Sparrow is distributed in grasslands and near human habitation in a wide band across tropical Africa. It feeds mainly on seeds both wild and cultivated .

It has a grey head and underparts with chestnut upperparts and a white patch on the wing coverts.

Its song is a monotonous series of chirps.
