The Grey-headed Kingfisher is distributed in tropical Africa south of the Sahara and across the Red Sea into the south-west of the Arabian Peninsula. In West Africa it migrates with the rains moving north in the rainy season and south in the dry season. It is found in woodland and bush but, on migration, in a wider variety of habitats.
