The Fan-tailed Raven is distributed in the Horn Of Africa with some disjunct populations further west and in the Arabian Peninsula and Israel. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in dry bush country with cliffs and gorges up to 3,600 metres.

It has a short tail and a thick bill. In flight the tail looks very short and the wings look very broad.
