The Egyptian Plover is distributed in sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal in West Africa to Ethiopia. It is found along large rivers with sand and gravel bars. This bird was seen at the Tono Dam flying along one of the canals. We believe that it is the first record at this site.

Egyptian Plover, Tono Dam, Ghana, June 2011 - click for larger image There is still uncertainty about its relationship to other birds but many authorities now place it with Coursers and Pratincoles. It is sometimes placed in its own family.

It has a very distinctive pattern of black, white and creamy-buff.
