D'Arnaud's Barbet is distributed from Ethiopia to Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in dry bush and wooded grassland where it feeds on fruit, seeds and insects especially termites.

Some authorities include 4 sub-species but the HBW and Birdlife International checklist has only two with the other two split into 2 species. Both of the remaining sub-species are found in Ethiopia. Photo 1 is of the nominate sub-species and photos 2 and 3 are of T. d. boehmi which has an all-black crown.
