The Crowned Lapwing is distributed from Ethiopia and Somalia down the east to South Africa. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. They are found in dry grasslands up to 2,000 metres and are not particularly attracted to water.

The black cap and white ring around the crown can be seen at a distance while it also has red legs and yellow eyes.
