The Chestnut Wattle-eye is distributed in tropical Africa from Sierra Leone to western Kenya and south to Angola. It is found in primary and secondary forest where it feeds on insects, beetles, spiders and other arthropods. It also eats berries, small fruits and seeds.

Male Chestnut Wattle-eye, Kalakpa, Ghana, May 2011 - click for larger image Comparing the males in photos 1 and 2 with the female in photo 3 one has to assume that the species got its English and specific name from the female. Photo 4 shows an immature bird.

It has a variety of vocalisations and one that appears to be territorial is a series of monotonous notes.
