The Black Heron is distributed throughout much of Africa south of the Sahara apart from the Congo Basin and desert areas. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in shallow waters of lakes, ponds and rivers.

It is a small heron with all black plumage, yellow toes and yellow eyes.
