The Black-and-white Mannikin is distributed throughout much of Africa south of the Sahara. It is found in thick grass and bushes in forest clearings and edges, along water courses and in unkempt gardens.

It is glossy black above and white below with black bars on the flanks. The bill is large and blue-grey in colour.
