The Black-winged Kite is distributed in Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, the Indian sub-continent and south-east Asia. It is found in savanna and fringe habitats such as forest edges, gallery forest and clearings.

Black-winged Kite, Tono Dam, Ghana, June 2011 - click for larger image It feeds mainly on small mammals such as rodents but also on small birds, insects, lizards, etc.. It hunts either from a perch or from a hovering position between 10 and 60 metres above the ground.
