It is a mainly black and white heron with a white throat and foreneck and a black head and hindneck. The bill is
relatively short, chunky and dark above, greenish-yellow below. In flight the two-tones of the wing help to differentiate it from the Grey Heron
A. cinerea.
It is less associated with wetlands than other herons and is found in grassland and farmland as well as marshes and river margins. |
