The Black-headed Heron is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara. For a distribution map plus lots of additional information see Heron Conservation.

Black-headed Heron, near Bolgatanga, Ghana, June 2011 - click for larger image It is a mainly black and white heron with a white throat and foreneck and a black head and hindneck. The bill is relatively short, chunky and dark above, greenish-yellow below. In flight the two-tones of the wing help to differentiate it from the Grey Heron A. cinerea.

It is less associated with wetlands than other herons and is found in grassland and farmland as well as marshes and river margins.
