The Black-crowned Tchagra is distributed mainly in Africa south of the Sahara but there are also populations in the Arabian Peninsula and in north-west Africa from Morocco to Libya. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in a wide variety of open grassy or scrubby habitats.

It forages on the ground mainly for insects but also small fruits, spiders, worms, etc.
