The Black-billed Barbet is distributed from Eritrea and west-central Ethiopia to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania with a disjunct population in northern Cameroon reported in 1994. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

The specific name guifsobalito refers to the Ethiopian name for this bird.
