Beaudouin's Snake-eagle is distributed in a fairly narrow band in sub Saharan Africa from Senegal to southern Sudan. There is a distribution map at Birdlife International who classify it as Vulnerable given its small numbers and rapidly declining population.

Beaudouin's Snake Eagle, Ghana, June 2011 - click for larger image It is found in woodland and wooded savanna where it feeds, as its English name suggests, mainly on snakes. It hunts from a prominent perch as in photos 1 and 2 or from a hovering position.

It is similar to Short-toed Snake-eagle C. gallicus but is smaller with shorter wings and a squarer tail. Also note the combination of dark hood, fine-barred underparts and almost white wing linings.
