Tono Dam, Ghana
June 2011

The Barn Owl is found throughout most of the world where the winters are not too severe. There are about 28 sub-species and the one found in Africa south of the Sahara is Tyto alba affinis. It is found in a wide variety of habitats but not in deep forest and it is often associated with man. They usually hunt at night or at dawn and dusk.

The African sub-species is greyer than the nominate form found in Europe and also has more prominent spotting on the underparts.

This particular bird was roosting in a tree during the day but then flew off and settled in the depths of a palm tree where it was very difficult to see.
